BBFC 5-4 West Hill United

“Cracking game with… well taken goals, some poor defending, saves by the woodwork, & a tremendous fightback. Entertaining & heart-stopping”

We got off to a very slow start against a West Hill side boosted by their first teamers, especially Numbers 10 & 11 who caused us so many problems.

Our opponents were quicker to the ball, more physical, better at recovery runs to get behind the ball, & they hit us on the break to great effect.

We conceded a direct free kick & with the other 3 goals, we left one of their main men in one-on-one situations with 3 of our back four.

Their movement, quality of final ball & pace was simply too much for us.

We were 3-2 down at half time, having twice got back level after going behind.

It was frustrating because we conceded their second & third goals just 2 minutes after equalising twice with some terrific team moves.

The evergreen Ray Pennels (what a season he’s having) & the woodwork also saved us from going further behind at half time.

Despite making 2 changes to the team between 45 & 55 mins, we went down 4-2 due to the same problems.

But then the tide changed. We went 4-4-2. United tired. Numbers 10 & 11 were surprisingly subbed.

We began to win the midfield battle & started to play some great football, creating chances.

We kept calm & showed great character & fight.

Apart from a few moments after going 4-2 down, we never doubted we’d get back in the game.

Three goals in 17 mins turned it around.

Although the woodwork – followed by another great save by Ray Pennels – denied United a 5-5 draw, the job was done.

Here’s the action:

7 mins: 0-1 down.

23 mins: 1-1. MoM Aaron Jamieson’s 5th of season – great finish after sublime pass from Harry Loates & forging run by Liam Chantler.

25 mins: 1-2 down

35 mins:  2-2. Clinical finish by Harry Loates after terrific pass by Byron Lear.

37 mins: 2-3 down.

61 mins: 2-4 down!

70 mins: 3-4. Chris Wakeford bullet header from Jamie Crouch corner.

80 mins: 4-4. Jamie Crouch penalty (9th goal of season) after Aaron Jamieson brought down.

87 mins: 5-4. Byron Lear shot deflected into net by a United defender. Much celebrations!

90 mins: Phew, it’s all over & we can smile, show relief & relax!

Young assessed ref did well. Big thanks too, to ball-boy Robert plus support from Ethan P & “seniors” Dave, Melvyn, Francis & Michael.

So…that’s 3 league wins in a row & undefeated over 90 mins in four.

One down & two to go before Christmas to try & secure 3rd spot going into 2018.
