THIRD TEAM REFLECTIONS
West Hill United 3-2 BBFC
“Another frustrating narrow loss. Now a forced time of reflection & re-think”
Always risky reflecting at the height of disappointment, but here goes…The top WPS pitch was better than you might have thought given the weather, though either/or the strong wind & driving hail was very hard to play with for most of the game. In the end, we didn’t finish the chances we had, we needed to be a little more direct with the wind in our favour in the second half, & we defended poorly as a team with the goals we conceded on 13, 62 & 79 mins.
Lessons learned:
– We committed ourselves too quickly so players went past us too easily
– We didn’t close down quickly enough (though their second was along range stunner)
– We solve one problem – eg defence, & then need more quality in attack. We then attack well but then concede too easily
– We are still lacking accuracy in our passing, which is a very great risk to our passing game
– We need to be more direct around & in the box …less “tippy-tappy”
– A very poor decision not to give us a clear penalty also cost us a result.
Positives:
— Anthony Hickman‘s third of the season – a close range finish to level at 1-1 after 22 mins
– MoM Jamie Crouch‘s great free-kick to put us 2-1 up on 61 mins – Jamie’s 8th of season
– We handled the elements well keeping the ball on the ground
– We played the best football without any reward
– We made changes with subs, positions & formation to try everything to get a result
– Great team spirit & work ethic, with a tremendous “let’s keep going & get back in the game” attitude when we fall behind
– We are still frustratingly not far off being a consistently good team. Our overall performances & narrow losses show that (as we have only ever lost by one goal).
With no game next week, its gives us all the opportunity to reflect & think about what we can personally & collectively do to go off a pitch at the end of the game with a great big smile on our faces. The search continues….
