Northiam 4-2 BBFC
“A disappointing performance but we could have won 20-0 & still not secured 3rd place due to Wittersham not fulfilling their Robertsbridge fixture”.
Despite going 1-0 up in 20 seconds – a BBFC or ESFL record this year? – we fell well below the high standards we had set ourselves this season. Ben Kempner‘s terrific through ball was quickly latched onto by Adam Thompsettwho cooly slotted home past the keeper in an one-on-one situation. Deja vu on 15 mins when Northiam did a similar trick on us to level. So 1-1 at half-time though Northiam were dominating possession & playing neat triangle football to suit the very warm conditions. We did defend well & when we got the ball forward we had opportunities to trouble the Northiam back four. Sadly the hard working Adam Thompsett was left isolated with little support as we were often forced into defending 4-5-1. The second half did not start well for us as on 47 mins we conceded a soft free-kick at the edge of our box. Northiam scored from the resulting header. The game changer came around 65 mins. Adam Thompsett scored a perfectly good goal given by the ref, who then changed his mind after consulting the Northiam lino. We were not happy as the last touch before it came to Adam in a close encounter with his defender was off the Northiam man. Sadly we then conceded again after a Northiam wide man beat our full-back to slot home at the near post. Guttting. But we rallied again having success with opportunities down the left with Ben KempnerJames Williams & Adam Thompsett. Around 70 mins we won a free-kick around 20 yards out & Jamie Crouch hit a Ronaldo style dipping & straight hit into the top left hand corner of the Northiam net. His 18th of the season. Game on. Through-out the second half we used substitutions & tactical changes to try & win the game but as we pressed forward we were sucker-punched on 88 mins when Northiam made it 4-2…our worst loss of the season. Certainly can’t fault the effort & team-work of our lads but this match did expose some weaknesses we will need to address next season
